This is the last book I read. I finished it on a train, which could have potentially been rather embarrassing as I did tear up during the last few chapters!
The story follows Emma and Dexter, a pair of best friends from University, on their journey through life by documenting one day - St. Swithin’s Day - each year for 20 years.
It was quite hard to get into… the first half of the book, I’d say, moves quite slowly. It’s frustrating to hear of Emma’s monotonous life in a job she hates, whilst nonchalant Dexter lands himself a career in the media. I also found it quite difficult to relate to the characters, who have grown up in the 1970s. However, the second half of the book really grabbed my attention, as the characters become more ‘human’ and begin to show their weaknesses with age.
I won’t tell you about the ending, in case you plan on reading it (I recommend that you do!) but take it from me that it’s both surprising and emotional!
I’ve just read that this book is due to be released as a film, with Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess starring as the protagonists. Filming finished last September. Can’t wait!
